Roger Dale Orvik
Roger Dale Orvik, age 69, passed away peacefully at home in Shelly, MN, on Sunday, May 23, 2010, with his family by his side.
Roger was born December 4, 1940 to Palmer and Anne Josephine Orvik in Crookston, MN. He attended Cheerful Hut Country School from 1946 to 1947, and then went to school in Halstad. Roger graduated from Halstad High School in 1958. He was active with livestock in the FFA, and was a football player for the Halstad Pirates. After graduation Roger started farming on the family farm. On November 17, 1963, he married Janet Louise Thorson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hillsboro, ND. Along with farming, Roger worked for American Crystal Sugar from 1964-1974 in Crookston, and at the Hillsboro Beet Plant from 1995-2003. He retired from farming in 1996 and worked for area farmers during the spring and fall. He was also the Shelly township officer from 1979-2010.
Roger was very involved as a member of Zion Lutheran Church and later Shelly Marsh River Church. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Roger was treasurer and trustee at Zion Lutheran and served on the stewardship committee at Shelly Marsh River. He was known to participate in many church functions and valued his friendships with other members. Roger enjoyed working around the yard and keeping an eye on area crops. He also enjoyed camping at area parks and traveling around the country; but there was no place like home. He was always available to help relatives, neighbors, and friends and was known for his muscles! Roger liked to read or watch a good western as long as he could stay awake and did not run out of popcorn. Roger was a family man who loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, and could always be found with candy in his pockets. Roger was preceded in death by parents, Palmer and Anne Josephine Orvik, and sister, Darlene Vettel.
Roger will be remembered by his wife, Janet; son, Randy of Jonesboro, AR; daughter Debbie (Jerry) Bierwerth of Columbia Heights, MN; son, Jamie (Carrie) of Bloomington, MN; daughter, Stacey of St. Paul, MN, three granddaughters, Anna Bierwerth, Haley and Sierra Orvik; one brother Jerome, of Shelly, MN, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
